Idioms are things we use in our every day lives, even though you may not realize it!
An idiom is a figurative saying. Figurative means not literal. For example, the idiom "When pigs fly" doesn't mean pigs are actually going to fly! It means that you don't believe that what the person you're talking to is saying what is actually going to happen! Idioms are a great way to spice up any story! Idioms can also help you squeeze in a couple extra points on that essay due next week!
Did you know? There are idioms from all around the world! Like the idiom "to feed a donkey spongecake" from Portugal which means: to treat somebody better than they deserve! We hope this article will help you better understand idioms!

our idiom journey...
Learning about Idioms was a lot of fun! We did all types of different lessons with Ms.Young our student teacher to teach us more about idioms. For example, when we went over what idioms are, we looked at some foreign idioms! It was very amusing to listen to my classmates guess what the idioms meant.
|
Our class also drew pictures of the figurative and the literal side of idioms. For example, "who let the cat out of the bag". You can draw a cat in a bag and someone telling a surprise. Drawing idioms was a lot of fun and it was a great way to learn about idioms.
<< Here you can see a picture that our classmate Sonam a.k.a. "Time" drew of the idiom "who let the cat out of the bag".

Another cool thing we did was an idioms collection. We had a specific amount of time to put all types of idioms in a box and when time was up. Ms.Young a.k.a. "New Leaf" looked at all the idioms and hosted the Idiom Awards. Five people got an award. Don't worry though, you can have an idiom drive at your house too!
Here is a picture of what our idiom collection box looked like after Ms.Young took all the idiom submissions out! We collected over 150 idioms!! >>> |
Here's a gallery of our Idiom Collection Winners!! Not only did the win a cool origami prize, they also had the honor of having their portraits done by fellow classmates... (click on the picture for a close-up).
After all of this, our teacher Ms.Young (a.k.a. "New Leaf") told us about making a website and here we are. First we did the main part, the skeleton. To find out who was doing what, we put up a sign-up sheet for people to either sign up for writing or technology or drawing. As you can see, me and "spongecake eating donkey" signed up for writing.
Thanks for reading our article!
